REAL MINERO | BECUELA | 700 ml

Becuela (Agave marmorata, elsewhere commonly known as Tepextate) is a type of maguey that grows throughout many different regions of Oaxaca. The plant’s historical use in spirits was for the most part limited to remote and isolated regions of difficult terrain. This agave reproduce exclusively from seed and is renowned for its large and beautiful yellow inflorescence. The flowering stocks begin to shoot up in February, and typically flower during Holy Week and are used for decoration in churches of the Central Valleys for Easter. Amongst palenqueros the plant is infamous for its extremely low sugar content and the difficulty involved in harvesting and transporting these plants from their preferred terrain of rocky hillside, steep ravines, and cliffs. These areas are most often inaccessible to trucks or even donkeys or mules and must be carried out by hand - leaving behind itchy rashes and blisters caused by its highly caustic juices.

This exceptional 25-liter Becuela was aged in "dama Juana" glass containers for 1 year and 4 months. The extended resting time in glass creates a smoother and more refined softness, with a lingering aftertaste. Limited quantity of numbered bottles. This is truly an exquisite and rare bottle.

  • Made by Maestro Edgar Ángeles Carreño
  • 52% Maguey Becuela (Agave marmorata) 
  • Age of the agave: 30 years to reach maturity
  • Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca, México
  • Roasted in truncated conical earthen oven 
  • Crushed with electric mill
  • Fermented in open air sabino barrels with natural yeast using well water 
  • Double-distilled in Filipino style clay pot still (no water added)
  • 50,4 % ABV
  • 25 liters produced in April 2022
  • Rested in a glass demi-john, or "damajuana" in Spanish, for 1 year & 4 months before bottling
